WARNING: this is a full update. You may want to have a glass of wine with it.
So many times I have written you a letter of thanks, to only fold it in a neat pile in a drawer at my mother's house, only never to be sent. You will never know how much you have affected my life. The early education in art that you gave me has made me the strongest person. I now ask about 1000 questions before I believe anyone else teaching art--what is their opinion on coloring books, what do they espouse about assignments? Seriously, I'm just trying to duplicate my foundations with you... and any time I came up against someone trying to teach me a book-like experience on art, proportion this and proportion that... I have rebelled, angrily.
The best compliment I have ever received is when one of my colleagues at architecture school said (after we received the most random and unexplained assignment from the professor), "we all stood there stunned, while Meghan went off into a corner doing something 100% different, completely confident." The less the professor said, the happier I was.
OK , I'm bragging in this next one... After graduating from cornell for architecture I have recently moved to china ... where i lived and worked for two years. My chinese is not so bad now. Also my bartering is very much improved. Now I am located in san francisco closest to the largest chinatown in america... it's awesome, i can understand so many people talking on the bus...
After coming back to the US, there were no jobs in architecture. I have started a small business until architecture comes back to life and hope to continue it as long as the market allows. My visions of Katherine taking over a chair in your house, making it her own with tape and paint ... well, they follow me. I now am going to be on the local news friday for my chairs, (www.enroutestudio.com) . I was so aggravated at the lack of interesting fabric for uphosltery that i decided to learn how to make my own. I now have a small studio running prints where i help people to make fabrics that they like for their furniture. I don't know if you know about the website: www.etsy.com, but i sell all my chairs there... you should consider selling your art on etsy.com. In the last 8 months I had 7000 views to my etsy page, whereas i had 90 views on my 'yelp.com' page. PS (let me know if you don't yet know about Google Analytics...via them, I have found out my website has been seen in over 70 countries...including brazil, syria, iran, and tasmania)
Anyway... one thousand thanks to you julia. I would have never been as open to the experience of creative experimentation without you, and I am overwhelmingly glad that my mother sought you out when I was knee high... It has truly made all the difference to my character, both your teaching and to watch you in action as a role model.
